Google SEO Starter Guide and local ranking: what is official

Google's official position is split across two documents. The Google Search Central SEO Starter Guide covers how Search crawls and understands your website, while the Google Business Profile help page says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. To improve local ranking, complete and verify your profile, earn genuine reviews, and publish clear pages. Google is explicit that no one can pay for a better local position, and it warns that the guide holds no secret that will rank you first.

What the Google Search Central SEO Starter Guide actually says

The SEO Starter Guide is more modest than most agency summaries suggest. It opens with a clear warning: there are no secrets here that will automatically rank your site first. Its job is to help search engines crawl, index and understand a site, and to help people decide whether to visit it.

The practical advice is plain. Use descriptive URLs, group similar pages, reduce duplicate content with redirects or canonical tags, and let crawlers see the same CSS and JavaScript a browser sees. Write unique and accurate page titles, keep text readable and current, and use descriptive link text and image alt text.

The most useful part for a buyer is the list of things Google says not to worry about. Meta keywords are not used. Keyword stuffing breaks the spam policies. Keywords in your domain name have little ranking effect. Content length alone does not determine ranking, and heading order is not something to obsess over. E-E-A-T, often sold as a ranking lever, is not a ranking factor according to the guide. If a proposal bills heavily for these items, ask why.

Relevance, distance, prominence: how Google improves or limits local ranking

Google's Business Profile help page describes local results as mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Each one calls for a different response, and only two of them are really yours to influence.

FactorGoogle's definitionWhat you can do
RelevanceHow well a profile matches the searchChoose accurate categories, complete your details and attributes
DistanceHow far the business is from the searcherLittle: keep your address and service information accurate
ProminenceHow well known the business isEarn reviews, respond to them, get cited by other websites

Distance explains a common misunderstanding. A business owner searches from their own office, sees themselves first, and assumes the job is done. A customer five kilometres away can see a different result. Rank trackers that check a single point therefore give a partial picture, so ask where a position was measured.

Prominence is where your website connects to your profile. Google says links from other websites and review counts and ratings play a part. Its help page also recommends verifying the business, keeping hours and attributes accurate, responding to reviews, and adding photos and videos. Those tasks are unglamorous and free, which is why they are the right place to start.

Where the official guidance stops, and where sales pitches begin

Google does not publish a formula, so anyone claiming to know the exact weights is guessing. Its guidance on hiring an SEO states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and it tells you to avoid providers who claim a special relationship with Google or offer a priority submission. It also says you should never have to link to an SEO.

The spam policies add a firm limit. Buying or selling links for ranking counts as link spam, unless those links are qualified with a nofollow or sponsored attribute, and sites that violate the policies may rank lower or disappear from results. Any plan built on bought reviews or link packages puts your business at risk for a short-term gain. Timing matters too: the Starter Guide says changes may take a few hours or several months, so ask for a method rather than a date.

A sensible order of work for a local business

Start with the profile, since it costs nothing and addresses relevance directly. Verify it, pick your categories carefully, fill every field that applies, and set up a simple habit of asking real customers for a review. Next, make sure your site is indexed by using the site: search operator and Search Console, which the Starter Guide recommends. Then give each service or town you truly serve a useful page, written for a person with a real question.

You may not need outside help for any of this. A single-location shop with a small service area can do most of it in a few afternoons with the two Google documents open. Hiring someone makes more sense when the site has technical problems, when you are moving to a new site, or when you face strong competition on valuable searches. I sell SEO work myself, so weigh that advice accordingly.

If that describes your situation, my SEO service starts with what is actually blocking you, and I make no promise of a first position because nobody honestly can. You can begin with the free site audit, or write to me with your site and profile link. You will be talking directly to the person who does the work.
