How to appear in ChatGPT answers: a one-page audit
To appear in ChatGPT answers, first make sure OAI-SearchBot can reach your pages: OpenAI says sites opted out of it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. After that, optimization means giving your best page a direct, sourced answer and evidence that you are real. No one can guarantee a citation, so the sensible approach is to audit one page at a time and measure what happens.
I am an independent web developer who sells SEO services, so I have a stake in this topic. I read the sources below on 1 November 2026. Part of OpenAI's help centre was unavailable to me directly, so I only state what I could read or cross-check.
Choose one page before you optimize anything
Most advice on this subject begins with a site-wide checklist. I would start with a single commercial question instead. Pick the one where a wrong answer costs you the most: a price question, a comparison with a competitor, or whether you serve a given need. Then ask ChatGPT that question in several wordings and note who it cites, and whether your company appears.
Treat this as a snapshot rather than a measurement, because answers can vary between sessions. Its value lies in showing you the kind of source that gets picked: a vendor's page, a comparison site, a forum or the press. If only press articles come up, a better service page may not be the answer you need.
Check access: the part OpenAI actually documents
OpenAI's crawler documentation describes three agents. OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train foundation models. ChatGPT-User visits pages in response to a user's request; OpenAI says it is not used for automatic crawling and does not determine whether content appears in search.
Those settings are independent, so a business can refuse training and stay eligible for search. Read your robots.txt file, then ask your host whether a firewall or CDN rule blocks these agents, since robots.txt only tells part of the story. Your server logs will show whether the crawler is actually visiting. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take around 24 hours to reach its search systems.
The one-page audit
| Layer | What to check | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Access | OAI-SearchBot allowed, page returns a normal response | Fix the rule; nothing else matters until this works |
| Text | The answer is readable text in the page, not locked in an image | Add a plain written version |
| Directness | The first paragraph answers the question on its own | Rewrite the opening, keep the detail below |
| Evidence | Prices, dates and claims link to their source | Add sources or remove the claim |
| Identity | Author, company, location and real examples are stated | Add them to the page and an about section |
Only the first row rests on OpenAI's own documentation. The others are editorial judgement: I cannot show you that any of them causes a citation, though each helps the human reader who decides whether to contact you. Google's guidance points the same way for its own AI features. It says there are no special optimizations necessary and no dedicated schema or AI text files, and it recommends keeping important content in text form. That statement covers Google, not ChatGPT, yet it is a useful counterweight to sales pitches.
Why rankings will not settle the question
You will hear that ranking on Bing or Google is the whole game. The published evidence is less tidy. In February 2025, Seer Interactive tested about 100 questions and found more than 87% of citations in Bing's top 20, while calling its domain-level insights directional because of the small sample. In August 2025, Ahrefs reported on 15,000 long-tail queries that only 8% of ChatGPT's in-text citations sat in Google's top 10, noted little difference between Google and Bing, and warned that its results may have changed.
Query rewriting may explain part of the gap: Seer notes that ChatGPT can simplify a long question before it searches. For a buyer of SEO services, the takeaway is simple. Search visibility still helps, but treat any single percentage with suspicion, including when it appears in a proposal.
Measure, then decide whether to continue
OpenAI's publisher FAQ says sites that allow OAI-SearchBot can track ChatGPT referral traffic in analytics tools such as Google Analytics. Record that traffic for the page you changed, along with the enquiries it brings. Repeat your test questions on a fixed schedule and keep the results in a simple spreadsheet. You will not get a clean experiment, since answers vary and many people read an answer without clicking, but you will have more than an impression.
When this is the wrong project
If your customers find you through referrals or local search, your reviews and business profile deserve attention first. If your site is slow, broken on mobile or vague about what you sell, fix that before thinking about AI assistants. Large brands that need to monitor hundreds of questions across several markets will be better served by a dedicated tracking tool or an agency with a full team than by an independent developer like me.
A simple next step
Run the audit on one page this week. If access is the problem, the fix may take minutes. If you would like help with the rest, my SEO service page explains how I work (it is written in French, and I am happy to discuss your project in English), and the free site audit is an easy place to start.
