On official list prices read on 1 November 2026, WordPress.org hosting in France costs far less than Wix plans: about €180 excluding VAT over three years at OVHcloud, against about $640 before tax for Wix's Light plan. But that sum omits the maintenance WordPress demands, while Wix includes hosting and updates. Compare the cost of your time as well as the invoices.

Wix official website plans: what the list says

The Wix plans page displays the following monthly prices, billed annually and in full at purchase. They are shown in US dollars for reference, exclude tax and vary by location. For France, La Fabrique du Net reports €16.80 a month for Light and €40.80 for Business, citing a July 2026 capture, so check your own checkout page.

Light$17.772 GBNone listed
Core$29.7750 GBBasic
Business$39.77100 GBStandard
Business Elite$159.77UnlimitedAdvanced

Two conditions deserve attention. The free domain voucher applies to a first Premium purchase for one year, must be used within 60 days and does not cover renewals. And Core or above is what you need to accept payments or bookings, according to that same page, so a tradesperson or therapist who wants to take bookings should not budget on Light.

Wix SEO features, in plain terms

Wix's SEO features page lists automatic and editable robots.txt, bulk 301 redirects (up to 500 URLs from a CSV file), default canonical tags you can change, automatic sitemaps, structured data on products, events and posts, plus server-side rendering. These are the controls a small business usually needs. The plans page does not break SEO tools down plan by plan, and refers instead to marketing suites at each level.

Wix is the source of this list, so read it as a vendor's description. No feature on it can promise you a ranking. It simply means the tool should not be what stops a small site from being indexed.

WordPress.org hosting costs in France

WordPress is open source under the GPL, and you pay for what surrounds it. Its requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS, so check those on any plan before ordering.

OVHcloud's web hosting page lists a Perso plan at €2.99 excluding VAT a month for the first year (€3.59 including VAT), then €5.99 excluding VAT on renewal, with one domain for the first year under conditions stated on the site. It also lists a cheaper Starter plan, whose suitability for WordPress you should confirm. o2switch advertises its main offer from €1.86 excluding VAT a month, paid annually, with a renewal at its standard rate, so read that rate before comparing. Introductory prices flatter every host, and the renewal price is the one to use in your budget.

Three years of invoices, side by side

RouteCalculationThree-year total
Wix Light$17.77 × 36 months$639.72 before tax
Wix Core$29.77 × 36 months$1,071.72 before tax
OVHcloud Perso with WordPress€35.88 first year, then €71.88 × 2€179.64 excluding VAT

This assumes list prices do not change, which nobody can promise, and it mixes dollars and euros, so treat it as an order of magnitude. It excludes the domain after its first year, and any premium theme or paid extension on the WordPress side. Wix promotions may also differ from these figures.

The cost the table leaves out

The WordPress documentation asks owners to stay on the latest version, keep plugins updated and back up regularly. Either you spend that time, or you pay somebody. A maintenance contract can quickly erase the hosting saving, and market rates for site maintenance show how wide that range can be. With Wix, that work is largely absorbed by the subscription.

Wix has its own hidden cost, which comes on leaving. Wix states that a site must run on its servers and does not support external hosting. Your domain can stay with another registrar, and I would keep it there, but moving platform means rebuilding the site. The legal side is the same on both routes: a French business site must show its host's details and its identification details.

Which budget suits which business

Choose a Wix plan if you want one bill and no technical chores, and if the site is small enough that you could rebuild it. Choose WordPress.org if you will publish for years, want portability, and have someone reliable for updates. Neither suits a business whose site must do something specific, such as a booking flow tied to internal processes.

I should state my interest: I sell custom business websites and WordPress maintenance, and I publish no prices. For many very small businesses, Wix or a modest WordPress install is the cheaper and sensible choice. A custom site, which I usually build with Astro with a target of 100 on the four Lighthouse criteria, is worth discussing when the site is already bringing in enquiries and you want to stop renting your platform. My business website page explains the approach, and my hosting and maintenance page covers the ongoing side. Request a quote to get an exact figure.
