Hire a freelance Astro.js developer in Europe in 2026

To hire a freelance Astro.js developer in Europe in 2026, you have four real routes: Malt for European profiles under a platform contract, Upwork for a wider international pool, Astro's own agency directory for teams, and direct contact with an independent. Upwork and Malt publish fees that add to the freelancer's price, while a direct contract leaves the checks to you. Whichever route you take, judge candidates on shipped Astro sites rather than on a keyword in their profile.

Malt, Upwork profiles and agencies compared

RouteWhat you pay on topBest forMain weakness
MaltService fee on the invoiced amountEuropean companies wanting a contract frameworkSearch results depend on what freelancers declare
UpworkMarketplace fee plus a contract initiation fee on the Basic planWide choice and fast shortlistsLarge pool, so sorting takes time
Astro agency directoryAgency pricing, no platform fee mentionedLarger builds needing a teamVery short list, few European names
Direct freelancerNo platform feeLong relationship and direct talksYou do all the checks yourself

On fees, Malt's help centre describes a Starter plan at 10%, an Advanced plan at 15% and custom Enterprise fees for clients, applied to the amount excluding tax. Upwork's pricing page indicates a 5% fee on the Basic plan, 10% on Business Plus, and a one-time contract initiation fee from 0.99 to 14.99 dollars on Basic. These rates change, so check both pages before you budget.

How many Astro developers are really on these platforms?

I looked for a reliable count of Astro profiles on Malt and on Upwork, and I did not find one. Any number you read elsewhere should be checked by running the search yourself. Arc also advertises vetted Astro developers, and it gives another comparison point, but it is a vendor's page and its availability figure changes over time.

The official option is smaller and easier to check. Astro's directory of partner agencies showed four names when I read it on 1 November 2026: Seibert Group (global), Lucky Media and Bits&Letters (North America) and Bejamas (North America and Europe). No French agency appeared. Being listed is a useful signal about a relationship with the Astro team, but it says nothing about fit with a small European budget.

For rate context, a French benchmark from May 2026 places confirmed web developers (three to six years) at 500 to 650 euros per day excluding VAT in the Paris region or fully remote, citing Malt and FreelanceRepublik. It is not specific to Astro, and it is a secondary source that does not show raw data. It also says rates outside the Paris region tend to be 10 to 20% lower. These are market figures and not my rates: I do not publish prices and work by quote.

How to tell a genuine Astro developer from a keyword

Ask for two live sites built with Astro, and ask what the candidate personally did on each. Then ask questions that are hard to bluff. How do you structure content collections, and why? When would you add an island, meaning a small interactive component that loads JavaScript, and when would you avoid one? How does a CMS change reach the live site? How would you handle redirects if the site replaces an older one?

A good answer is specific and mentions trade-offs. For example, someone who has used Sanity's visual editing with Astro should know it requires server rendering, which changes your hosting. A paid test on a small, real page is often more revealing than an interview, and it treats the freelancer fairly.

Also look at commercial details. Who owns the code and the accounts at the end? Is the repository in your name? Who handles updates once the site is live? Since the company behind Astro joined Cloudflare, whose announcement says Astro stays open source and platform agnostic, also ask whether your hosting choice stays open. A freelancer should explain why they recommend a host.

When a freelancer is not the right hire

A single freelancer is a poor fit if you need design, copywriting, development and SEO all delivered at once under tight deadlines, or if you need several people available at all times. An agency from the directory above, or a local studio, will likely serve you better. It is also worth asking whether you need Astro at all. If your team wants to install plugins and change features without a developer, Astro's own WordPress migration guide warns that you may have to build many existing features yourself, so staying on WordPress could be the sensible decision.

A simple way to run the search

Write one page: the goal of the site, the list of pages, who edits content, the deadline, and the systems to connect. Send it to three candidates from different routes, and compare how they question it. The freelancer who spots something you forgot is often worth more than the lowest quote.

I have an interest here, as I am one of the options. I am Pierre-Arthur Demengel, an independent developer based in Metz, France, also working with clients in Belgium, and Astro is my preferred technology for showcase websites, with a target of 100 on all four Lighthouse criteria, as an objective. I also take on subcontracting and white-label work for agencies. Please ask me for the same proof you would ask anyone else. If you would like a clear answer on your brief, send it here and you will hear back within 24 working hours.
