Hiring Sylius developers in Europe: agency or freelance?
To hire for Sylius and Symfony development in Europe, start with the official partner directory for agencies, and consider a freelance developer when your project needs one senior person rather than a team. A certified partner badge shows a recognised place in the Sylius network, and does not tell you who will work on your shop. Choose according to the size of the job, the continuity you need and the named people involved.
I should say where I stand: I am an independent Sylius developer based in Metz, France, and I do not claim any Sylius partner badge. I have an interest in this comparison, so check the sources below for yourself. I reviewed them on 1 November 2026.
What "certified partner" means in the Sylius directory
Sylius runs a public partner directory. Solution partners, the ones who build and migrate shops, appear at four levels: Global, Leading, Premium and Professional. Separate labels sit next to them, such as Officially Trained, Core Contributor, Plugin Maintainer or Sylius Plus Expert. Sylius describes its program as granting official accreditation from its core team, along with discounted training and consulting.
The directory page does not explain what qualifies a company for each level, and it does not rank anyone. So a badge is a useful filter and a weak verdict. It reduces your risk of hiring someone unfamiliar with Sylius, yet it leaves out the questions that decide your project: did this team upgrade a shop like yours, and will those same people be on your account?
Note also that a directory listing depends on a commercial program. Skilled Symfony developers who never joined it will not appear there, and you need other ways to verify them, starting with their public code and references.
Agency, freelance or in-house: choosing for your project
| Option | Suits you when | Main risk | How to reduce it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partner agency | Large build, several workstreams, need for design, project management and cover during absences | Staff rotation, heavier process, minimum budget | Have the team named in the contract |
| Freelance developer | Takeover, audit, upgrade, custom features, maintenance, direct contact wanted | Single point of failure, limited capacity | Documentation, shared repository, agreed backup plan |
| In-house hire | Continuous roadmap for years, commerce is core to the company | Long hiring, knowledge leaves with one person | Pair with an outside reviewer at the start |
Geography matters less than you might think for code, and more for contracts, language and tax. In the directory filtered on France, the first page shows names such as BitBag, WIDE, ACSEO, WEEBY, Datasolution, EMAGMA and Hello Pomelo. I compare what these profiles show in a separate article on agencies and case studies.
Hiring a freelance Sylius developer: what to verify
A freelance hire stands or falls on evidence of real work. Ask for a project where the person handled production problems, and not only new features. Sylius has clear technical checkpoints for your interview. Ask how they would plan the move away from Sylius 1.14, whose security support ends on 31 December 2026, what changes in the 2.3 release with its PHP 8.3 requirement, and how they apply a release such as the October 2026 security fixes. Someone with real experience will ask about your plugins and customisations before giving an estimate.
Then look at continuity. Who holds the repository and server access? What happens if the person is ill for three weeks? Ownership of code and access should stay with you from day one, and this is worth writing down, whatever the size of your provider.
For budget, published guides give a rough view of the French market. One 2026 grid places PHP and Symfony freelancers at 450 to 550 euros a day at intermediate level and 580 to 700 euros at senior level (Paris region medians), and another gives 450 to 600 euros for a confirmed PHP developer. These are not official statistics, they are not Sylius specific, and they are not my rates. I publish no prices; a quote is the way to get mine.
When a freelance is the wrong hire, me included
If you are launching in several countries at once, with design, ERP and data migration running in parallel and contractual uptime commitments, one person is not enough. Hire a team. The same applies if your procurement department requires a badge or a company of a certain size, which is a legitimate constraint. Similarly, when you have a stable product with years of steady work ahead, an employee may cost you less than repeated outside help.
A hiring process that avoids costly mistakes
Write one page about your business, including order volume, Sylius version, plugins and the systems connected to your shop. Send it to two or three candidates. Compare how they question the brief as well as the figure they send back. Then start with a small paid piece of work, such as an audit of one critical flow or a written upgrade plan, before you commit to a long contract.
As an example of what you can ask to see, here is my own reference: Coucouroucoucou, a Belgian Sylius shop that I took over, with about 15,000 orders retained along with customers and invoices, no interruption of sales, 14 custom screens and a move to a dedicated server. It is a takeover, and it shows that kind of work specifically.
If your need fits one senior developer, my Sylius developer page explains how I work, and I answer within 24 business hours. If it does not, the partner directory is a good place to begin, and I will happily tell you so.
